ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

In order to achieve the best that James Monroe has to offer, both in education and activities, attendance at school is a must. Listed below are a few regulations about attendance that you should know and follow:

Full and Partial Day Absence Procedures :   When a student is absent, parents / guardians need to call the attendance office at 375-1301, AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE ON THE DAY OF THE ABSENCE and specify the reason for the absence. Absences not cleared for three days will be considered unexcused and may be classified as a truancy, which in turn may require Saturday school.

Off-Campus Permit :   Parent/guardians MUST come to the office for their student. ANY STUDENT LEAVING CAMPUS DURING SCHOOL HOURS WITHOUT AN OFF CAMPUS PERMIT WILL BE CONSIDERED TRUANT. Only those adult people who are listed on the student's emergency card may pick up a student during school hours.

Attendance Office Records :   It is critical that the attendance office have accurate and up-to-date information on file. Please keep the emergency card information current.

Tardies :   If a student is tardy to school then the student will serve lunch detention on the day of the tardy. For those cases that come up where it is "not the fault" of the student, two tardy passes are issued to students each quarter to be released from detention. If the two tardy passes are not used then they may be turned in for a reward at the end of the quarter.

STUDENT PLANNER & HOMEWORK HOTLINE

375-0135 ext. 5 + teacher's room number

We have placed a great deal of importance on daily homework, student planners and homework hotlines. Each student is provided, free of charge, a student planner at the beginning of the year. Each period the student is to write down the assignment for that class. At the end of period 8 there is a short time for teachers to check students' journals and to use positive reinforcement. It is the parent's responsibility to monitor the completion of the journal and to check the homework for accuracy and completeness. If a student is struggling the first question that will be asked is if he/she is maintaining the journal and if it is being regularly checked at home.   It is an important organizational tool and a method of parent/teacher communication. Another service is the homework hotline. When your child is absent from school and needs his/her homework assignment, please telephone the homework hotline to get the missed work.   The hotline number is 375-0135, and the extension is 5 + the teacher's room number.   We are committed to doing our part to maintain good communication with parents. Please join us by expecting your student to make use of these valuable tools. A replacement journal will cost $6.00 during any quarter.

MEDICATION

Medications, both over-the-counter and prescription, which a student must take during the school day, must be kept in the health office, and be accompanied the proper filled in form, a note from a doctor and the parent/guardian.   No medication of any kind, prescription or over-the-counter may be carried by a student on campus.   Prescription medications must be in the prescription container with the name of the student, the doctor, the date, the type of medication contained therein, and how often the medicine is to be given.   No medication, including aspirin, will be administered by a James Monroe employee without a written doctor's order and written parent consent. If, at the end of the school year, the parent does not come in and pick up the medication, it is to be destroyed. All medication forms may be picked up at any S.S.U.S.D. school's office.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY

In cases of medical emergencies, every effort will be made to first contact a parent or guardian of the child.   If this is not possible or if, in the opinion of school officials, immediate action is required, emergency ambulance services will be called.

DRESS CODE

Students attending James Monroe will wear clothing appropriate for the promotion of an effective educational program which provides for student safety and health and avoids distraction to the educational process.   The following regulations allow for individual choices and, at the same time, discourage clique-type groups from being formed based on clothing style and/or expense.   We encourage each student to take his/her education seriously, beginning with the clothes he/she wears to school.

Whenever, in the judgment of the principal, a violation of the basic policy has occurred, the principal or principal's designee shall so advise the student and direct suitable corrective action such as changing into PE clothes.   In the event of non-compliance by the student, the parents will be notified.   Persistent refusal to comply will require implementation of appropriate disciplinary measures, including the possibility of suspension.

BUS CONDUCT RULES & REGULATIONS

Sierra Sands Unified School District has the goal of providing safe, efficient, and appropriate transportation for our students.   Drivers may issue verbal warnings or a written Bus Conduct Report if a student does not follow proper conduct on or around the bus.   A student may be denied transportation if they do not follow the Conduct Standards.   Every effort will be made to inform students and parents of any revised schedule changes.   Should any questions arise, please call the Transportation Department at 446-2012.

The district is not responsible for any damages or misconduct at bus stops.   Accidents or damages caused by students are the responsibility of the student's parents.   At all bus stops, students should stay away from the curb, the street, and the bus until it comes to a complete stop.   When exiting, students should walk directly away from the bus.
