From the Principal's Desk:

Greetings Monroe family! As you know, the school year is moving along quickly. Third quarter grades were mailed home recently, 8 th graders are registering for Burroughs, and STAR testing begins on April 19. We are already preparing for promotion and buses are reserved for end of the year activities.

Right now your student is not only gaining academic knowledge, but is also developing lifelong habits, including: work ethic, study habits, sense of personal responsibility, citizenship, communication skills, and respect for authority. Your student is amidst some of his/her most critical years. Together, we can give your student tools for successful teenage living and adult living. Please take a look at the above skills and help us to develop these by reinforcing them at home. For example, encourage your student to study , even if (s) he says, "But I finished my homework." Studying is a concept that goes beyond "completing homework." And, studying is a lifelong skill that  will prove useful in college and in the workforce. Studying can involve re-reading notes that were taken in class, or reviewing vocabulary words for 10 minutes every evening, or looking over a graded quiz to identify misunderstandings.

As I've mentioned, STAR testing begins on April 19 and will continue through April 29. Only eighth graders will test the week of April 19. They will take the science and history sections of the STAR in their science and history classes. All students will take the English Language Arts and Math portions of the STAR during the week of April 26. Healthy snacks, such as granola bars, will be offered to your student each day of testing.

Please talk with your student about the importance of taking this state testing seriously. Encourage him/her to work to the best of his/her ability from beginning to end. When students perform well on the STAR assessments, they are more likely to pass the California High School Exit Exam. Also, performance results from the STAR are used heavily when identifying proper placement in courses here and at Burroughs High School .

We look forward to seeing you at our Open House at 6:30 PM on April 28, during which we will gladly showcase your students' accomplishments.

There is so much going on during these last months of school. We will utilize our autodialer system to remind you of the various events. Please be sure to review the academic/behavioral criteria for student eligibility to participate in promotion and/or end-of-year activities. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Clara Finneran
